How big does your rug need to be?

Rugs are important all year round in the home for bringing spaces together and keeping things cosy underfoot. With the cooler months upon us, your deadline for buying the perfect rug may have just moved a little closer.

Buying a rug is an investment and it's hard to know the right size you'll need for your space. If you're struggling to choose a rug, read on for our guide to how big a rug should be for every room in your home.

How to choose the right size rug

Whether you are buying a rug for the bedroom, living room, dining or transitional areas of your home, here is our rug placement guide to help you choose the right rug size for your space. 
  • Your rug should be generous enough to allow for furniture to be comfortably arranged on and around it
  • When in doubt, go bigger rather than smaller for a room that looks thoughtfully designed
Common sizes include:
      • 160cm x 230cm
      • 200cm x 290cm
      • 240cm x 330cm
      • 300cm x 400cm
        Living room rug size

        Best size rug for your living room

        Your living room rug size should:

        • extend an extra 15-20cm on the floor either size of your sofa
        • be large enough to sit under the front third of your sofa along its width
        • accommodate your coffee table with space to walk around it
        • allow space for the front legs of any occasional chairs in the space
        • suggested living room rug sizes include 160cm x 230cm, 200cm x 290cm, 240cm x 330cm
        • for larger rooms consider 300cm x 400cm 

        Living room rug size guide 

          Dining room rug size

          Best size rug for dining room

          Your dining room rug size should:

          • extend an extra 20-30cm on the floor behind your dining chairs when tucked in
          • leave at least 30cm around perimeter away from walls
          • leave room for chairs to sit full on the rug with an occupant in them
          • allow for chairs to stay on the rug when moving to sit down
          • suggested dining room rug sizes include 200cm x 290cm, 240cm x 330cm

          Dining room rug size guide

            Bedroom rug size

            Best size rug for bedroom

            Your bedroom rug size should:

            King bed size (mattress 183cm x 203cm):

            • leave at least 20cm space away from bedside table legs
            • cover floor where you step in and out of bed
            • extend into the room at least 30cm from foot of bed
            • suggested king bed rug sizes include 240cm x 330cm, or 
            • for larger rooms consider 300cm x 400cm 

            Queen bed size (mattress 153cm x 203cm):

            • does not extend to bedside table legs
            • cover floor where you step in and out of bed
            • extend into the room at least 30cm from under foot of your bed
            • suggested queen bed rug size is 240cm x 330cm
