The secret to a beautifully styled home is in the addition of vignettes to your decor.
A vignette is a considered group of objects displayed together in a pleasing, balanced way.
If you’re looking to create a beautiful display at home with your treasured things, it’s all about the edit. A quick flick through your favourite interiors magazine or glance around a boutique hotel suite will reveal vignettes that work to create a stylish, sophisticated look to interior décor.
A vignette can be as simple as a tiny tray with a few carefully selected crystals, or can include plants, glassware and even the more practical objects on your kitchen bench.
Books - Glossy coffee table tomes or a sweet stack of vintage books
Flowers or plants – a sweet bud vase or small plant brings nature inside
A little bling – crystals, curiosities, glass or metallic treasures
Objets d’art – vases, sculpture or ceramic bowls
“Group objects for maximum impact and use colour, shape or texture to form eye-pleasing compositions.” Tara Dennis
Here are our top tips to style your vignette:
1. Get the balance of your vignette right
Group objects together in the middle or on one end of a surface, then use a larger piece nearby, such as a lamp or a vase to create height.
2. Keep your vignette simple
Don’t overload a vignette with too many objects
“Avoid style overload and keep things simple. Less is definitely more.” Tara Dennis
3. Make your vignette practical
Styling up a vignette in you bathroom to corral your beauty products will encourage you to keep things neat and tidy. An entrance hall vignette can include a pretty bowl to collect keys.
4. Use trays to keep your vignettes functional
Styling a vignette onto a tray adds a little luxe to your vignette, making it functional and beautiful – your ottoman can display an elegant vignette by day and acts as a footrest by night!
5. Create seasonal vignettes
Tiny pumpkins at Halloween, candles and sparkly things at Christmas… even a birthday in the house is a great excuse to change up your decorative vignettes to create an ever-changing display of what you love in your home.
6. Include nature in your vignettes
A collection of seashells in summer or the inclusion of collected finds from nature or your latest beach combing walk will keep your décor relevant and stimulate your creativity.
7. Create vignettes where you spend time
Inject busy zones in your home with style and a little calm here and there. A vignette at the end of your bench or on your kitchen island will draw the eye to that space – even when you’ve got mess elsewhere!
